Happy post-holidays, guys!

Since 2012 is coming up, I’ve been making New Year’s plans. I’m about 3/4 of the way through the Zoötrope animal book (which is why I accidentally ate a bit of blue pencil today). A friend and I are excited to start a new comics blog about Uncanny Eating experiences. And there will be more Terka – a new comic called Terka Takes a Walk and some other material that I’m looking forward to playing around with.

Other than that, there’s a few other projects that need some sorting out in my head, but one of the advantages of being a full time art student is that now, I spend the bulk of my day drawing. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to Finally Have Time. Theoretically.

And Alexander Rothman, Peter Quach, Miriam Gibson, and Blujay and I will be at MOCCA in April.

I made these for my Dude for an anniversary. We both love Buck Hunter, an arcade game found in a dwindling number of bars. Using absurdly huge plastic shotguns, you compete to shoot the maximum amount (3) of bucks possible in a series of rounds, racking up points and humiliating the other person through sheer awesomeness of your sharpshooting skills.

Though I am not a fan of hunting in real life, Big Buck Hunter, and it’s amazing cousin, Big Buck Hunter Safari, are highly addictive. The draw of this game is hard to describe, you kind of have to play it to understand.

If you live in Halifax, there is a cabinet in Bubba Ray’s near the entrance to Hunt Club.

Some background: last night was Drink N’ Draw in the 12th Street Alehouse.

The above quote was culled by Dan Strauss from an old Batman and Robin comic he read years ago. Joker’s been arrested (saying “Joker’s wild! hahahaha!”) and Batman gets in the Batmobile with Robin. Robin turns to him and matter-of-factly says the aforementioned about a lobotomy. Oh our country’s history.

The second quote of the evening’s Drink N’ Draw was from Adam Tyrrell : “I’ll always make an exception for Hickory Barbecue.”

Dan has regular drink n draw’s at Barcade in Jersey City every Tuesday evening. They’re a lot of fun – just hop onto the PATH train and you’re there.

Hey guys, sorry I’ve been away from the site for the past few weeks. Things have been a little hectic lately, but they should be calming down soon, and so I hope to return to posting things regularly. I’ve also had some very preliminary ideas for my next comic, but I’ll save that discussion for another blog post. Which will also let me go another week without having to draw something for this blog, ha.

But in the interest of disseminating my comic as far and wide across the internet as possible, I’m now offering a CBR file of Freedman for download for free. You’ll need a program that can read a CBR file, or you can just change the file extension from .cbr to .zip and unzip the files yourself. I’m offering these files under a Creative Commons license, which allows free distribution and derivative works as long as they’re also shared. Donations, however, would be greatly appreciated by both me and my stomach.

A few months ago, I did some comics for NERD comics Washington Anthology (a follow up to their Darwin Anthology). Miriam Gibson and Blujay of Tapir Tooth did their own hilarious Crossing the Delaware piece for the Anthology. Here’re my few pieces:Fun fact: when Washington got a bad respiratory infection, how many pints of blood did his doctors bleed from him? Five, five pints of blood. That’s as many as ten cups, and that’s terrible. When I was in middle school, my history teacher Ms. Wixted gave me a copy of DON’T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HISTORY which had this anecdote about Washington in it. It’s my favorite Washington story. He was an interesting, if aloof man who had strongly held ideas about the place of a President. He was also a soldier and a human being who enjoyed the crap out of a good cuss once in a while. Much more interesting and complex than the bloodless (cough) figurehead remembered nowadays.

Also, Henry Knox was fat. But he still moved the hell out of those cannons he was bringing from upstate NY to the siege of Boston.

After some confusion (Lederhosen was packed – I am a lame bar-picker, or a lame which night to decide to show up with a large group picker) we ended up at Caliente Cab. Thank you everyone for coming! And thank you for not telling the wait staff that it was my birthday (it was not – but Caliente Cab has a loud ritual involving a sombrero – and there were threats).

And we comics jammed! Let’s do it again soon – and we missed Bree , Ray and Peter . Next time! Next time on a different night and at a place that’s not Caliente Cab!

SPX 2011:

Being with Tapir Tooth at SPX was a blast! I got some pretty sweet swag including a Fancy Reginald and Beartato signed print, Three Fingers (which blew my face off with awesomeness), and some really fantastic mini comics.

I met up with some amazing people, and picked up their comics, including: Dan Strauss and Ryan Eggensperger's The Young Dissenter's Handbook, Katie McDermont and Kelsey Sunday's K.K. Freebird, Hypnospiral by M. Jacob Alvarez, funny parody Zelda comics and Hot Pot Vol 2, a super-cool Star Wars anthology, 33 Beasties by Drew Weing, Mimolette Bakery by Jen Weber, Birds in the Bushes by Zach Gaillongo, an inked sketch from Raina Telgemeier, and great mini comic by Alabaster. And it was great seeing Sophie Goldstein and meeting Tiny Ghost Stories!

It was my first time at SPX and it was a great con! Everyone was digging into the mini-comics and couldn't wait to read the latest Hark a Vagrant Book or check out Habibi (which is epic and amazing). So many great things to see and do.

Eating at the Chiptole across the street every day was icing on the cake. Can't wait for next year.

The next con I'll be at is the Halifax Zine Fair (part of the Halifax Pop Explosion), Oct 22nd.

THE YOUNG DISSENTER’S HANDBOOK:

One of the books I picked up at SPX was THE YOUNG DISSENTER’S HANDBOOK, by these guys:

Imagine a collection of advice in the vein of How to Seize Control of Your Life, but with absurdity, sympathy and a hilarious sense of humor. It all follows the exploits of an anonymous shirt & tie wearing guy who is at different points gleefully oblivious, painfully self-aware, elated, or deeply distressed.

Ryan says “the genesis for the book was basically when I received a christmas gift one year of a pack of cards entitled 50 Things You Should Do Once in a Lifetime. I flipped through it once, quickly noting the cutesy sentimentality of it (“have a conversation with a hobo!”) and later that day started making my own list . . . a year or two later, I found the notebook and it made me laugh, so I started transcribing the list into my computer, splitting it in two. The first half (which we may turn into a book soon as well) became Shove Your Breakfast Up Your Ass and 99 Other Things You Absolutely Must Do Before You Die, and the latter, sadder half became the first draft of The Young Dissenter’s Handbook.”

I love how the character is both really sincere and foolish.

Dan says, “It changed drastically over the course of several drafts and ways of thinking about it. We worked and re-worked the order using index cards, tiny pieces of paper, and endless lists of entries, which were edited, eliminated, reintroduced, and rearranged countless times. Eventually, we came up with the idea of making it a linear narrative.”

Dan: “I originally thought of this as an interesting way to exercise a certain shared humor I have developed with Ryan during the many years of our friendship. It ended up signifying a lot more to me . . . like a very revealing satire of my personality (and Ryan’s) when we were in our 20′s.

And thus, the end of Freedman. At least for now.

The 23 pages you’ve just read took 9 months to complete. I’m a little drained right now, and I’ve basically gone into hibernation mode here — including the layer of insulating fat. I’m taking the next couple weeks to just decompress and relax (and play video games, if anyone has any good recommendations), but after some recuperation I’m going to decide what my next comic project is going to be. It could be a continuation of Freedman, as there’s a lot of stories I still have to tell with Charlie Moses. Or it could be something completely different. But I’ll come back to this story eventually, I think.

If I can be a little indulgent here for a second, I’d like to thank (deep breath) Michael Quach, Xavier Quach, Daniel Shapiro, Nathan Furr, Vira Pons, Miriam Gibson, Livia Veneziano, Anne Diaz, John Gall, Carol Carson, and Stephanie Zuroff. Special thanks to Alex Rothman and Andrea Tsurumi for providing much-needed feedback anytime I asked, which was often in the middle of the night. I’d also like to give thanks and apologize to Ryan Sheppard, Peter Jurado, Ashley Cunningham, Jesse Hawk, and Vanessa Morris for putting up with me over the past 9 months. So this is the second to last page of the comic. Next week will see the last page of Freedman published and the completion of 9 months of work on my end. I haven’t decided what comes next, whether or not to continue with more Freedman stories or move on to something else. The only certainty right now is that I’ll be publishing Freedman in color sometime later this year, so keep an eye on this space for further details once I figure that out.

I’d also like to keep this space warm while I figure everything out. I might take a few weeks off, but then I’ll start posting some sketches and artwork here weekly until things become more certain on my end. This was the first time the entirety of Tapir Tooth (plus the wonderful Alexey Sokolin) attended SPX and the first time any of us actually made it to the Ignatz Awards (although half got into the packed ceremony and half stayed outside in the lobby eating chocolate fountain the whole time). You have to give the SPX organizers a ton of credit – SPX is now our favorite show because of how remarkably friendly and warm it is. It’s smaller than MOCCA, but the SPX planners were excellent about staying on top of updates before the show, and during the show there was always the feeling that they were around and happy to help you (how to submit to the Ignatz’s, get badges, get drink tickets. There were surprise drink tickets the night before at registration. The very nice and patient Eden even came to our table twice when we couldn’t find her to give her Ignatz submissions). The warmth permeates the entire show – co exhibitors and attendees are so much more willing to chat than they are at MOCCA. We’ve given up worrying about selling merchandise (Sunday was slower than Saturday, we made enough to cover lunches both days and then promptly hemmoraged money on buying other comics) and focused more on seeing people. Given that criteria, the whole experience was extremely satisfying.

Dan Strauss & his friends, were there, Neil Brideau stopped by (did you know they had Quimby’s temporary tattoos at the free desk?), Josh Bayer gave us an issue of the awesome Nancy comics anthology (“today was the day I would buy her a soda!” is now my favorite catchphrase), Sophie Goldstein and Jen Weber and Kate Farquhar and Maria Calderone came by and hung out. We lucked out neighbor-wise, Fanfare/Ponent Mon couldn’t have been nicer.

So the last week was a rush of comics printing, stapling, binding, bussing, then chipotle run (Miriam and Blujay live in a cruel, burrito-less zone in Halifax), and tabling. We’re all looking forward to sleeping. I only caught one panel – on the grotesque (only one takeaway : despite there being really grotesque works in comics and the fact that comics don’t get the scrutiny of say, a big budget movie, people are surprised at how tame a lot of comics are, despite the fact that they could be more extreme). Tom Hart! of S.A.W. was there! Hurricane Irene cancelled our chance to say goodbye before he moved to Gainesville to start S.A.W., so this was really really damn nice to see him.

There was Craig Thompson! Or, in the Ignatz slideshow, a picture of woodchopping “Craig Effing Thompson,” Chris Staros of Top Shelf was really friendly as always. D&Q was packed with people buying Kate Beaton’s HARK A VAGRANT! The woman I spoke to mentioned that HAV was guaranteeing that this was D&Q’s best SPX to date, and the book was outselling the entirety of their other stock. She and I also talked about friendly everything was. She thought not only was it amazing that Kate Beaton had so many fans, but that they were consistently some of the nicest fans she’d ever seen. It lines up with what I saw at MOCCA – people happy to get her books and meet her but also thrilled to meet each other.

Looking forward to reading lots of comics now. BIG QUESTIONS, HABIBI, THREE FINGERS, LINT, HARK A VAGRANT, APPROXIMATE CONTINUUM COMICS… I wonder how many people go there and buy published comics as opposed to the self-published ones or self-published minis. I doubt it’s an even chance between those two markets – it’s probably more that the main sales are the published ones and the minis kind of exist along the side of those sales. I don’t know. Recognizable character based content seems to do well (Pokemon comics), and people do come over because they like someone’s art style, but most sales are for stuff that people already know about. It’s making us reconsider our approach to these cons.

Metro ride to Union Station. Busssss.

The Bolt Bus back ended up being full of cartoonists – so the satisfying end to a satisfying trip was riding in a dark and quiet Bolt Bus with sleeping cartoonists, watching Lightning flash through the windows and listening to rain. Peaceful.

So this weekend I’ll be exhibiting at SPX 2011 in Bethesda, MD. I’ll be at the Tapir Tooth table (E6) if you’re attending. Stop by and I’ll sign some comics for you. I’ll be especially nice if you bring donuts or other food stuffs. I’ll have a black and white ash-can preview of Freedman in its entirety (23 pages) on sale, as well, so if you’re at the convention you can read the ending before anyone else!

Speaking of, there are only two more pages after this left. So two more weeks of comics, and then this site will go into hibernation mode for a while as I figure out what my next step will be.

Also, Freedman began syndication on Komplicated.com last week. One page a week will be posted every Friday there, starting from the beginning. So welcome to anyone who’s been sent this way via Komplicated. Make yourself at home.

This is an unsettling look at what happens when a strange customer shows up for some yakitori . . . and won’t leave. Two shopkeepers struggle to save themselves before they run out of food. An odd, dark story about when eating and appetite take on monstrous proportions.

So this is a pretty big week for me. Not only did I just come back from an amazing vacation in California, but this week sees the publication of my first book cover illustration — for the book How To Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu. It’s a really good book, and I highly recommend it (I don’t get royalties, so take that as unbiased advice). Here’s hoping people like the cover...
