The Adventures of Max Quarterhorse, Part I

The first part of The Adventures of Max Quarterhorse, a supernatural noir comic written by Robert Attenweiler and drawn by me. Three other artists are doing the last three chapters. The book will be a very cool and eclectic blend of styles. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Freedman

Freedman:

freedmancover

Freedman is my current webcomics project. Serialized over the next four months, Freedman is a story of revenge, slavery, race, and the people history has forgotten. Or, in more bombastic terms:

At the end of the Civil War, four million people were freed from chains of bondage. One of these newly freed men, Charlie Moses, wanders the Texas countryside as he tries to right an injustice from his past. But is vengeance all there is? What does it truly mean to be free?

The first four pages are up here. Come back every week and there should be a new page to read, if I don’t die from sheer exhaustion before I finish. Care to place bets?

DIE WALKURE

DIE WALKURE:

Months ago, my friend Melissa asked a bunch of us if we wanted to get tickets to Die Walkure, the Wagner opera. Not knowing anything about Wagner’s Ring Cycle Operas, I said, “sure, great!” then, “so how long is this?” 5.5 hours of opera seemed epic (two intermissions! and the actual Ride of the Valkeries song – but not in Apocalypse Now or Loony Tunes – you can see how little I know about Wagner) but it was … really good. Really, really good. I’m so glad I saw it.

You can see the evolution of my attitude throughout the evening — this was at the beginning:

There are completely ridiculous moments. Usually the moment when a couple realizes they’re brother and sister is a bit of a downer, but not in this opera! However, I wasn’t expecting Brunnhilde, she of the breastplate and horned helmet fame, to be as complex and sympathetic a character as she was. Or the scene where her father says goodbye to her to be as touching as it was.

Totally converted —- now there’s only 9.5 more hours of the Ring Cycle left to go!

Studies

Studies:

Running Engine

Here are some studies for upcoming projects: stealing shamelessly from Andrea Tsurumi, I’m planning a series of 13 blackbirds. And the next bunch of comics-poems will be about running. Probably a whole chapbook of pieces about this.

This blackbird is Andrea

This blackbird lives in a bog.

This blackbird is diving from a perch.

This blackbird knows what you are thinking.

Studies of barefoot runners

More barefoot running

My continuing ed. class is over—thanks again to Sal Amendola for his wisdom. Now it’s time to save money, but still time to keep learning.

New Gulf

New Gulf:

Another from Circulating Drafts

Well, Andrea pointed out to me that my “About” section and links had disappeared. So… they’re back. And here is the revised version of “Gulf” from the new, printed book.

GHOST DOG!

GHOST DOG!: "

(with apologies to Jim Jarmusch) I spent a lot of MOCCA doodling this guy:

GHOST DOG! He’ll be making more appearances on this site.
