Alternate Endings to Faith Erin Hicks’ Friends with Boys!

The 3rd (and ultimate) Alternate Ending will be up tomorrow.

FwB is a wonderful comic and I’m glad I could make this super silly comic to celebrate the end of it!

Faith is a great friend, (some might call her, dare I say, RAD) and her comic-ing abilities always blow my socks off, FwB is no exception. Go out and get the book today, dammit.

Garge himself

Here’s what my next screen print should look like—except less neon orange and more rust. I’ll try to update with a better version if I get a chance—or maybe I’ll just scan a finished print!

From e. e. cummings’s 1946 tribute to Krazy Kat:

…let’s make no mistake about Krazy. Her helplessness, as we have just seen, is merely sensical—nonsensically she’s a triumphant, not to say invincible, phenomenon. As for this invincible phenomenon’s supposed idiocy, it doesn’t even begin to fool nonsensical you and me. Life, to a lot of people, means either the triumph of mind over matter or the triumph of matter over mind; but you and I aren’t a lot of people. We understand that, just as there is something—love—infinitely more significant than brute force, there is something—wisdom—infinitely more significant than mental prowess.

You can read the whole essay, and much more, in Craig Yoe’s excellent Krazy Kat & the Art of George Herriman: A Celebration.

I love cat people, probably why I play too much Skyrim.

Working on a lot of comics lately. Took a small break to whip out this odd thing.

It’s like some weird version of The Handmaid’s Tale.

ZOÖTROPE – READ IT IN FULL

ZOÖTROPE – READ IT IN FULL:

Zoötrope takes you behind the scenes of a theater run by unusual animal performers. This children’s book also features a mysterious note, a missing title card, and a small love story, all in two acts.

As part of Viktor Koen’s book seminar project, we as a class read “My Last Attempt to Explain to You What Happened with the Lion Tamer” by Brendan Mathews and took visual or thematic elements from the story as inspiration for our own projects. I took the backstage/frontstage elements of the circus and turned them into this blue-and-yellow-lit theater story. Maybe tech theater folks can spot all the fire safety references.

It was a long and exhilarating process. Viktor and everyone in the class were challenging and inspiring critics and I owe them a lot.

You can download a low res PDF of the full book here.

I hope you enjoy the story! Let me know what you think!

“My Last Attempt” Show Comics

“My Last Attempt” Show Comics:

A number of folks in the SVA MFA Illustration 2013 class also made comics for their “My Last Attempt (to Tell You What Happened to the Lion Tamer) by Brendan Mathews” projects:

Keren Katz‘s Chronicles of the Falling Women is “a graphic novel about the tragic love between a lion tamer and a trapeze artist in the midst of an epidemic of falling women.” You can look at lots of images from it here.

Molly Brooks‘ comic, Ghost Circus: A Road Trip follows two friends chasing a phantom circus along its old route. One of them thinks they’re out for adventure, but the other one has some unfinished business with the ghosts. You can read her whole comic here.

3rd Ward Drink & Draw

3rd Ward Drink & Draw:

Here are some drawings from a Drink and Draw at 3rd Ward that I attended with the extremely talented Demetrios Vital. Definitely a great place. If you are ever in the neighborhood, absolutely eat at Nam Nam, which manages to have bubble tea and banh mi that are both excellent.
